Good doesn’t come cheap or fast: Understanding data ethics as situated practice
Join us in person on Tuesday the 28th of January, at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, as we hear from EFI Visiting Fellow Dr Anissa Tanweer on understanding data ethics as situated practice.
Doors open at 16.45, with Dr Tanweer’s talk starting at 17.05.
Abstract:
There has been much interest of late in making data-centric computational technologies more ethical and responsible—both preventing the many harms they can cause and harnessing their power for societal benefit. In this talk, Dr. Anissa Tanweer will present ethnographic stories of people and projects enrolled in such efforts to do “good” with data. From their experiences, she distils lessons about the norms, processes, and structures that can more robustly support data ethics in practice, and shows that good doesn’t come cheap or fast
Speaker Biography:
Dr Anissa Tanweer (EFI Visiting Fellow from September 2024 - February 2025) conducts research on the practice and culture of computationally-mediated science. She leads a longterm ethnographic study concerned with the rise of data science in the academy, and her newest project focuses on the moral economy of data-intensive astrophysics. In her post with the eScience Institute at the University of Washington, she applies her sociotechnical lens to the development, implementation, and evaluation of collaboration and training programs for data-intensive academic research. This includes her work with the UW Data Science for Social Good program and the UW Scientific Software Engineering Center.
